The initial eﬀort in claiming a place within the scholarly community of the university was to adopt a definition of research that was credible yet flexible. The terms of reference used drew on descriptions from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which served as an international standard for defining research and development.
Peer review is anyway only the first stage in a process of evaluation because as long as the artwork is retained in circulation, recorded or documented, then – as with the scientific paper – a re-evaluation can take place later, and matters of public acceptance can play a more significant role. This public acceptance constitutes a major aspect of the ‘impact’ of artworks.
