The Marines in China and on Samoa, 1894–1899 Starting in 1894 Marines and sailors of the Asiatic Squadron landed in China no less than nine times, with the longest period beginning in 1932. In fact, the events of the last six years in the 19th century on the Asian mainland served as a prelude to the chaos and political disorder that culminated in the United States’ intervention and occupation three decades later (1927–1940). This intervention by Marines in particular laid the foundation for the establishment of not only a permanent Marine legation in the Middle Kingdom starting in 1905 but also for the Marine Security Guard program of today.

The Marine detachment, led by Captain Henry C. L. T. “Tony” Waller, and sixty enlisted Marines. The Marines and bluejackets were given the mission to put out the many fires, stop the pillaging and looting, and protect the American and other foreign consulates near the Grand Square of Mehemt Ali. In order to protect the American consular officials, the leathernecks quickly established a guard at the American consulate. With the consulate as their base, the Marines then fanned out throughout the city and established a series of continuous patrols.
