Forry-one of them were lost during the month. The ACI officers ran a round-the-clock operation out of Richmond's Hangar #3. They conducted their preflight briefings at the wing's offices in the station's administration building because aerology was located there and so were the telephones to the Gulf Sea Frontier headquarters in Miami. Postflight debriefings were done at the hangar to save tired pilot a trip across the station. In addition to compiling a confidential flight folder containing information on the whereabouts of friendly submarines, estimated U-boat location , radio frequencies and call signs, recognition signals, firing areas to be avoided, and shipping movements, the squadron ACI officer also prepared a track chart of the convoy or patrol areas to be covered.

The first "M," which was delivered to Lakehurst in ovember 1943, had a volume of 625 thousand cubic feet. The M-2, M-3, and M-4, sequentially delivered in January, February, and April 1944, were 647,500 cubic footer. Subsequently, all were increased to 725 thousand cubic feet. With their impressive volume, roughly halfagain larger than that of a "K," the "Ms" were intended to operate in the tropics, where the warm and less dense air would generate less lift per cubic foot. Twenty-two were planned, but only four were built.
