Many parents find support in knowing that other parents have experienced similar problems in raising their children bilingually and have overcome these. With this knowledge in mind they may be encouraged to continue in their efforts if the going gets rough. Of course, it must also be recognized that some parents, for one reason or another, may decide that they do not wish to raise their children bilingually. Perhaps it is the case that the parents are highly fluent in the majority language, plan to remain permanently in the new country and see no particular reason for teaching the child the minority language.
Before discussing reasons for writing a book about raising children bilingually, let me begin by briefly describing my background for my readers. I myself am an immigrant from the United States and have lived in Sweden for the past twelve years. I was also acquainted with the many aspects of being an immigrant long before that as I was a third generation immigrant in the United States. I first became interested in bilingualism through my own learning of Swedish as an adult and this interest gradually increased to include bilingualism in pre-school age children.
It may perhaps seem ridiculous, but I am beginning to experience a sense of despair with regard to the language contact between myself and my two-and-a-half-year-old daughter. I feel that instead of growing closer to each other we are growing further and further apart every day. You, perhaps, may think that one cannot expect so much from such a young child. But my feelings concern the future much more than the present situation. Let me describe our situation. I am a Polish immigrant who has been living in Sweden for approximately five years.
